Considering a growing career
Her goal is a degree in interior design—while raising two young kids
By Laura Jeanne Hammond, 8/06/09
Naomi Soto could easily have two excuses for not continuing her education: two children, ages 3 and 4. But she’s not letting the pressures of parenthood take her eye off her goal of a degree in interior design.
“I began going back to school a couple of years ago so that I could get promoted at work,” she says.
After being laid off, she was able to spend more time on her education. Soto, from Phoenix, is now taking general education classes to prepare for her degree.
“Day care has been my biggest challenge in returning to school,” she says. “The college offers assistance during the regular school year and not during the summer.”
Before picking a major or new field, Soto recommends talking with a counselor at the school to help you find a career match.
“Stay with what you know, or look into the careers that are growing,” she says. “It will give you options to help you make the right decision in reinventing yourself for this economy.”
